Late last night an old dear friend who I have personally been close to for many years was laid to rest at Our Lady of Perpetual Trading, better known as The Scott Trade Center – home of the St. Louis Blues Hockey Organization.
I first met Goalie Controversy in May of 2001 when Roman Turek and Brent Johnson battled for the number one goalie position…Turek was a big veteran and really covered the net and Brent was quick and aggressive with his angles. Eventually Turek was traded in 2001 and that ended the Goalie Controversy.
A number of years past and eventually our paths crossed again with a chance meeting in 2009 with Goalie Controversy …that is, Manny Legace was in a heated battle with Manny Legace, neither one of them won and both cleared waivers and were banished to Peoria.
Finally in 2011 Goalie Controversy moved back into the neighborhood and took up permanent residence buying a house right down the street from me. Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak have battled for over 2 years in an intense game of highest paid goalie / face of the team – Jaroslav Halak VS cast off from Colorado – Brian Elliott looking for a second chance.
The Goalie Controversy has grown over the last two years, fueled by Halak injuries and Elliott shutouts momentarily interrupted by a TEAM train wreck in early February 2013 in which Elliott was chased out of town as the sacrificial lamb and a rising star was ushered in to rescue the desperate season.
However, a crescendo was reached on Thursday, April 18th at 9:50pm that put a final nail in the coffin – as it were – when Brian “Jennings Trophy” Elliott finally put to rest the Goalie Controversy with a heart pounding glove SAVE on Oliver Ekman-Larsson to gain a 2-1 shoot out victory over the Phoenix Coyotes late last night.
A private ceremony was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Trading today with Jaroslav Halak and Jake Allen looking on from the bench.
Sadly, I can’t really say that I will miss my old friend…but I do look forward to meeting new friends like “Why did they buy out the final year of Halak’s contract – controversy”?
