The Cardinals were up 2 – 1 over the Royals heading into the top of the 9th, they had beaten the royals the last Three games and were 3 outs away from completing a 4 Game Sweep of the KC Royals.

Enter Mitchell Boggs. In 18 appearances this year so far he has 2 saves… and 3 Blown Saves.

Boggs gave up a Home Run to the first batter he faced. Then gave up a Walk and another hit to the next 2 batters.

The Cardinals lost the game 4 – 2. They were “Bogged Down” by their reliever; who failed to bring any relief.

Last year in the Playoffs Boggs blew his save opportunity in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Washington Nationals, a blown save which would force the Cardinals to fight from behind to regain the series lead.

Boggs is not a closer. Thankfully this experiment is coming early in the season and not down the stretch.

The Cardinals have been relying on Mujica for the closing down of games. He is 17 for 17 in save opportunity’s so far this season, which is the 2nd best in the league.
